He served as an officer in the US Navy in WWII from 1943- 1946. Hargreaves worked for various universities and governmental agencies in soils, irrigated agriculture, or water resource development. He was employed overseas for over 25 years in 25 countries doing teaching, research, administration, supervision, and planning. These countries include: Brazil, Honduras, Peru, Haiti, Colombia, Philippines, Greece, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Thailand, among others. Hargreaves authored over 60 publications. He was a member or fellow of multiple scientific and professional societies including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, the Irrigation Association, and the International Commission for Irrigation and Drainage. Content Description
This collection contains publications, papers, correspondence, teaching files, research files, and professional and personal files. These files give greater background into the work and life of George H. Hargreaves. He dedicated countless hours to researching and improving irrigation techniques and formulas. His research in irrigation provides understanding to the workings of water resources, crop coefficients, and evapotranspiration methods in the United States and abroad. This data can be used to research his estimates and analysis of the cause and effect of irrigation, allowing for further development of resources and techniques for irrigated agriculture.
